UEFA Fines Zlatan Ibrahimović for Betting Interest

The European football governing body, UEFA, has levied a €50,000 penalty on AC Milan forward Zlatan Ibrahimović. This comes after an inquiry uncovered that he had a monetary interest in a wagering firm.

UEFA’s appeals panel decided to penalize Ibrahimović after discovering he violated their regulations against financial investments in gambling companies.

Ibrahimović has also been instructed to sever all connections with the betting firm.

UEFA also cautioned AC Milan and imposed a €25,000 fine on them because one of their players was found to have a financial link to a betting company.

UEFA initially declared they would be examining Ibrahimović in April. While the betting company was not identified, Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet reported that Ibrahimović owned shares in Bethard through his company Unnamed AB.

Ibrahimović began collaborating with Bethard in March 2018, assuming a development and ambassador role.

This month, Esports Entertainment Group agreed to purchase Bethard for €22.1 million (£19.1 million/$27 million).
