The United Kingdom’s advertising regulatory body, the ASA, recently addressed comedian Chris Rock’s television commercial for the gambling platform BetMGM. The advertisement, which debuted on October 4th, 2023, features Rock performing his signature comedic style in various settings – such as rotating a globe on his finger – accompanied by the slogan: “We’re BetMGM, and we understand it’s all about the spectacle.”

Certain individuals expressed disapproval, asserting that Rock’s involvement might be excessively enticing to minors, potentially violating advertising regulations.

BetMGM justified their selection of Rock as their spokesperson. They contended that Rock’s professional background, primarily established through stand-up comedy and roles in films intended for mature audiences, wouldn’t particularly appeal to anyone below the age of 18.

They did acknowledge his voice acting contributions to animated films like “Madagascar” but dismissed it as outdated and inconsequential. Furthermore, they emphasized that Rock’s social media audience consists predominantly of adults, with a negligible number of minors.

In conclusion, BetMGM underscored the advertisement’s sophisticated visuals and allusions to Las Vegas, arguing that these components wouldn’t precisely convey a “child-appropriate” message.

The UKs advertising watchdog assessed the promotional material and rejected the objections raised against it. The authority found no violations of regulations. While there were worries about the individual featured being associated with products for youngsters, the ASA deemed it insignificant. They concluded it wouldn’t hold substantial appeal for children, particularly given the passage of time since the person’s involvement with such merchandise. Therefore, the advertisement received approval.
